Three sparkling wines to fizz up your summer

Last weekend, we had a little neighborhood gathering. A progressive dinner party where we traveled (on foot) to neighbor’s homes where we enjoyed  cocktails and appetizers, dinner with wine, desserts, then a backyard fire pit with a tray of chocolate and a thermos of coffee with, or without "additives". 

We hosted the dinner portion and as guests arrived I offered a glass of Prosecco, a dry Italian sparkling wine traditionally served to clear the pallet.  One of my neighbors said,

“Hey champagne!  What are we celebrating?”



This got me to thinking about how we sometimes let the “rules” of wine limit us to what we enjoy, how we enjoy it and when.  At Cheers we often see an increase Champagne and sparkling wine sales around the holidays because that’s when you are “supposed to drink that”. 

So let’s toss the “rules” aside and explore Sparkling wine as an excellent choice year around, especially on hot summer days.  The selection offered at Cheers is varied enough that we can easily find something to pair with anything from a BBQ or walleye dinner, to  brunch on the deck, or even to enjoy fireside at the cabin.

Here are three suggestions of sparkling wine available at Cheers and how you might add them to a celebration of summer.

 

 

Jaume Serra Cristalino Brut Cava - $8.99

This dry selection from Spain is affordable enough to be versatile. Thinking  mimosas  for brunch? This is the pick! Want to whip up a punch for a crowd? Grab a couple of these and have a great time. This sparkler is airy and crisp with flavors of citrus and honey crisp apple with balanced acidity. "Cristalino" has been a favorite at Cheers for years!

 

 

 

 

 

Bisol Crede Prosecco di Valdobbiadene - $22.29

Yeah that name is a mouthful, but  what is important is that this wine is named for the clay soil in the steep vineyards of the Valdobbiadene region of Italy where the finest Proseccos are made. Crisp and dry this sparkler has concentrated flavors of ripe melon and peaches. It’s dry and a bit zippy off the tongue.  Prosecco is great with a salad or with a first course or as part of the salad.

 

 

 

 

Gloria Ferrer Blanc de Noirs - $19.99

This California Sparkler is a blend of 92% Pinot Noir and 8% Chardonnay from Carneros.  In the glass it’s got a beautiful light rose hue and lively bubbles. Flavors of bright strawberry, black cherry, lemon and vanilla dance off the tongue. This selection is perfect with a BBQ pork loin, Chicken under a brick or late evening with chocolate covered strawberries.

 

 

 

 

So don’t wait till the snow flies to enjoy sparkling wine let’s break the rules and celebrate summer!
